Term test

Hello NORCAN friends!

I thought it would be interesting to share the term test our students in 8. grade had some weeks ago.

Part 1: Is a classical test with out any supporting devices.

Part 2: The students worked in pairs with the tasks for 1.5 hours, and were allowed to use their textbook and computer to help them. Afterwords they had 1 hour to wright down their solution.

Our experience is that the students worked well all day long with the tasks, witch is usually not the case with long tests.

  • Thanks for sharing. Just like Leanne, I can understand most of part 1 as well.

Do I understand that part 2 has a group component (45 minutes) and then an individual component (90 minutes)?

    • Yes, we allow the students to solve and/or discuss the problems in groups. During this period they had a yellow paper to take notes on.

Afterwards they had 90 min. to individually write down their solution and reasoning for their answer.

    • Love this! Thinks this represents more the type of math leaners will experience after middle school and in their future careers.

  • Hi Jan Olav.

Thanks for sharing your test and task!  I find it fascinating to compare the assessments administered in Norway with those used here at home.  The startling thing is that without even translating the first assessment, I can determine fairly well what is being asked of students.  The second "task" assessment I will need to translate in order to understand.  This basic fact leads me to hypothesize that the "task" involves a greater depth of mathematical thinking than the test.  Assuming that my hypothesis is correct, it would make sense that the students show greater engagement and persistence in working with the tasks, rather than the tests.  This is very similar to what we are experiencing at Pereyma.  For this reason, we are working to create better, richer tasks that our students can use to develop their Mathematical thinking skills. You can be sure that I will be translating your task tonight.  I am looking forward to seeing how my students respond to a similar task...  Thanks again for sharing!

    • Part 2 is much mote about mathematical thinking, and here we also covered learning goals from grad 7 which we have not specifically been working on this term.

You will probably find some of the task in English here https://kangaroo.math.ca/
