Olds visit to TVA

Last week, Tecumseh Vista had the pleasure of hosting students and teachers from Olds high school in Alberta.  The students picked up their relationships like it was just last week we visited them in Alberta.   The visit began with Olds students and TVA students sharing out what they have done since our last visit.  Bill Toews brought 4 teachers from his new school so this also gave the students an opportunity to explain how their learning councils work in their schools.  After some in-depth discussion as to what a successful learning council might look like in different schools, Kyle Pearce led us on a math task.
Prior to our meeting, both Olds and TVA students carried out the same surveys with their student body and we took time to examine those results and discuss what we could do moving forward.  The one piece of data that really jumped out in both schools was the positive responses towards learning.  Survey questions can be found here.
The remainder of Olds visit consisted of them attending and presenting at a math council meeting.  Olds students shared out with our younger students the importance of working collaboratively and helping each other with their learning.  They also spoke about being proactive in their education and seeking assistance when needed.  The topic was perfect as our math council focus this day was increasing student engagement in math class.  We looked at different ways to approach traditional topics by using the website "Would You Rather".  Class reps were tasked with finding a task on that website that could be done with their class.  We also talked about why students are disengaged in math class and what could we do to help overcome this.  For next meeting each class is going to develop a class goal that will help achieve student engagement in their class. Thanks to the Olds crew for their participation in this!
Olds students also got to program Spheros through an obstacle course, work in our robotics lab, do some coding and visit different classes.  Teachers from each school had the opportunity to sit and discuss different things that were going on in each school.  It was a very productive visit and our students are going to remain in contact and continue to co-ordinate their Learning Council activities.
