#NORCAN #MathsJam

This week, Team Pereyma NORCAN members joined teachers and students from four other schools in Durham Catholic District School Board to participate in the DCDSB Board-wide Math Council kick-off!  A highlight of the day was an online MathsJam and sharing session with students and teachers from Tecumseh Vista and our Ontario Ministry of Education.  Teachers from Molde also joined us via Google Hangout, even though they were on a holiday break. The Ontario team so appreciated their dedication to the project and their willingness to accommodate the Ontario schedule!

We wanted to begin our day with something fun, so what else?  We did Math together!  After spending some time thinking, groups tweeted out their answers using the #NORCAN and #MathsJam hashtags.

It was so great to see the students having fun with Math and sharing their thinking.

Next, Math Council representatives from Tecumseh Vista shared their experiences, followed by members of the Pereyma Math Council and the Fr. Leo J. Austin Math Council.  Both the Austin and Pereyma teams shared the ways that NORCAN learnings and opportunities have inspired them to successfully apply for Ontario Ministry of Education Speak Up grants.  Using these grants, the Pereyma and Austin Math Council members plan to create Math Commons collaborative spaces at their schools, and to continue to work to change the perception of Math in their communities.  In early April, each group will host younger students from their family of schools for a day of math fun and student voice initiatives.

Durham Catholic students from across the board are inspired and eager to join in this learning.  After a lunch, during which students enjoyed Math games and shared their thoughts on Math and learning at our very own “Speaker’s Corner”, DCDSB student Math Council members collaborated to create short-term goals, long-term goals and next steps for Math Councils board-wide.  Students are looking forward to collaborating to host younger students for a Math event in the spring and to participate in more #MathsJams with our #NORCAN friends.
