Durham Catholic NORCAN team Visits Molde

Hello NORCAN friends! I hope that you all enjoyed a great summer. The Pereyma team was very fortunate to travel to Norway in late August to continue our work with our dear friends from Molde. During our time there, we planned with our colleagues, visited classrooms and had much rich discussion about our way forward for year 3 of the project. While we plan to grow and share more strategies and resources that support a positive math mindset, we will also continue to collaborate to use Math & Learning Councils to harness student voice and drive teacher learning.

Students and a teacher from our sister school, Fr. Leo J Austin Catholic Secondary School, travelled with us to Molde.  While in Molde, the Austin students were able to attend school and connect in-person with their international secondary school Math & Learning Council members, whom they had met via Google Hangouts. You may recall meeting Trish Maecker, our Durham Catholic colleague and fabulous Austin Math teacher, at the April Summit in Alberta. Trish has joined the Pereyma team and is helping us to spread NORCAN learning across our district.

The NORCAN project has significantly increased the collaboration among the teachers from these schools in our board, and we are hopeful that this collaborative spirit will continue to grow and spread. In June, Pereyma students were invited to present to board members about their thoughts on student voice and the role of our Math & Learning Council. Following this meeting and the first annual Durham Catholic DSB "Mathletics" banquet (to which the Pereyma students invited not only Austin Math Council members but all Senior Administrators at our board as well!) student voice is beginning to be incorporated into our board's Numeracy Action Plan.

  • Hi Leanne,

So awesome to hear the Pereyma Clan made it back to Norway for another opportunity to collaborate!

I know Paul is looking down with a smile on his face when he sees so many schools pushing positive math mindsets and math councils.

    Great work, Pereyma!
