Update from Ranvik

Hi Everyone!

First of all; my written english is far from perfect, but i think it's important for us norwegians to not make things more difficult than necessary and i know you all understand most of what i'm trying to say anyway. So i will not spend time checking my spelling, sorry.

At Ranvik we are looking forwards to the Ontario-visit later this spring. We have booked our flights, and all 8 of us are really excited. Here are a small update on whats going on in Ranvik.

We have had all (most) our students answer a questionare about the way they see tha math-teaching in Ranvik. Some of the results are a bit surprising, I'm gooing to make a summery of it and share with you ;)

The last months we have tried out some 3 act math-lessons, to see how this can help get the kids engaged. We have adopted som assignment from different places and also tried to make our own. I have found a lot of inspiration in Kyles blog (tap into teen minds), and it was a lot of fun last week to send him some pics of my kids deeply engaged in his "Buy out of detention"-task.

We are constantly working on helping the students to see how the math we are working on can be usefull in real life situations, and trying to make them wonder about things.

We are doing a math fair on Pi day ( march 14.), together with Otterson, and we hope this will be a fun day for all.

We are also thinking and discussing how we can change term test for our 8. and 9. graders to make the day more engaging, without removing the things we like about the way we "always has done it". I think we could take a tip or two away from the post Jan Olav had about the way they did it at Børresen this spring.

All in all, good things are happening! It hurts a boit to change your ways, but i'm sure we are heading in the right direction.

Linda
